COLOMBO (News 1st); A police constable and a rapper have been arrested in Meegoda in connection with the theft of a firearm.
The police reported that the constable, previously assigned to the Kotavila Police and recently transferred to the Mannar Police, stole a 9mm pistol and hid it at the rapper's residence in Meegoda.
The constable was attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau, and was transfered on 8th March.
The arrest was made following a raid conducted early this (14) morning by the Matara Division Crimes Investigation Unit, Mannar Crime Investigation Unit, and Homagama Police, under the instructions of the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Matara. The stolen firearm was recovered during the raid.
A senior police officer confirmed that the constable was arrested for the theft of the pistol, while the rapper was taken into custody for concealing the weapon at his home.
The police are investigating whether the firearm was intended to be used in a criminal activity.
